Our smiles can last a lifetime if we stay on top of our oral health care and practice good dental hygiene. However, it takes more than brushing our teeth to keep them functional and strong. The teeth and gums work together to create a healthy mouth, which is why it’s so important for individuals and their families to care for their smiles.

Here are five tips for how to maintain good oral hygiene in your family.

#1 Brush and floss every day.

Brushing twice daily and flossing once daily are essential for removing plaque buildup and food particles from tooth surfaces and crevices. Brushing with fluoride toothpaste strengthens your teeth and helps prevent cavities from forming.

Flossing cleans between teeth and stimulates the gums, which helps them continue their important job of holding the teeth in place. Ultimately, brushing and flossing keep your teeth and gums clean and freshens your breath.

#2 Use a mouthrinse.

There are several different types of mouthrinses you can use to keep your mouth clean and healthy. Mouthrinse washes away particles left behind after brushing and flossing, and it also can:

  • Freshen breath
  • Control plaque and gingivitis
  • Prevent decay
  • Whiten teeth
  • Soothe dry mouth

You can purchase over-the-counter mouthrinses, or your dentist can prescribe you a mouthrinse to help with a specific oral health concern.

#3 Eat a healthy, balanced diet.

Eating healthy is essential for keeping your teeth and gums healthy. We recommend limiting your intake of sugary foods and drinks, as they can lead to cavities, diabetes, and other health conditions, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention

#4 Stop smoking or using tobacco products.

Smoking and using tobacco products increase the risk of developing oral cancer, tooth loss, gum disease, bad breath, and tooth discoloration. If you would like more information on quitting smoking and how to keep your teeth and gums healthy, please contact us at our Charleston, SC dental office today.

#5 Get regular dental exams and cleanings.

Perhaps one of the most important things you can do to keep your smile healthy and functional is getting regular dental exams and cleanings. Your Charleston, SC dentist will check your teeth and gums for any signs of decay, disease, and other abnormalities, as well as:

  • Clean your teeth and gums
  • Take digital dental x-rays
  • Develop a customized treatment plan
  • Monitor your dental health
  • Provide treatment, when needed (i.e., sealants, fluoride, fillings)
