Few attributes have a more powerful impact than a bright, beautifully-aligned smile. A radiant smile can not only win over a room before we've even said a word but also boost self-confidence and self-esteem in the person to whom it belongs.

Thankfully for those with discolored, misshapen, or misaligned but otherwise healthy teeth, veneers offer a non-invasive path to a gleaming smile!

What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are thin, custom-made shells (typically of porcelain) that are bonded to the front surface of discolored, misaligned, and irregularly shaped teeth to improve their appearance. With proper care, good oral hygiene, and a healthy lifestyle, veneers can be expected to last for several years.

However, veneers are only a cosmetic solution and do not address problems such as a "dead tooth" or decay or disease in the teeth and gums beneath them. Anyone suffering from underlying dental issues should have the impending issue treated before getting veneers.

What Is a "Dead Tooth?"

A non-vital or "dead tooth" feels no pain and is a tooth that's lost its blood supply and nerve function, typically due to injury or severe decay. It can appear discolored and sensitive to pressure or temperature. It's important to note that veneers can be placed over a dead tooth but may need to be reinforced with a post beforehand.

How Do Make My Veneers Last as Long as Possible?

On average, with proper care, maintenance, and good oral hygiene, veneers can last between 10 and 15 years.

To ensure the longevity of veneers, it's essential to brush twice per day with a non-abrasive toothpaste, floss daily, and visit your dentist regularly for checkups. Additionally, to maximize the lifespan of veneers, certain habits like biting or chewing on hard objects (pens, fingernails) and excessively grinding or clenching your teeth (or wearing a night guard to bed) should be avoided.
