When you have a toothache, it can be hard to focus on anything else but the pain and discomfort you feel. If you are unable to see your dentist right away, there are other ways you can relieve your tooth pain. But first, what causes tooth pain and when should you seek immediate care?

Causes of Tooth Pain

Tooth pain can occur for several different reasons including:

  1. Tooth decay
  2. Fractures or cracks in the tooth
  3. Abscessed tooth
  4. Gum infection
  5. Damaged filling

If you have an abscessed tooth or infection, rapid treatment is essential to prevent the risk of spread or other serious health conditions. However, if your toothache isn’t caused by a serious dental issue, you can try to relieve the pain on your own until your Charleston, SC dentist can see you.

These three tips can help alleviate your toothache and provide you with comfort.

#1 Use a cold compress.

A cold compress, like an ice pack or bag of frozen vegetables, can help quickly reduce inflammation, numb the area, and reduce pain and tenderness. We recommend wrapping the cold compress in a soft cloth and gently placing it on the side of your face where the injured tooth is located. This cold therapy works best in 20-minute increments.

#2 Take an anti-inflammatory.

Anti-inflammatory medicine, like ibuprofen, can dull the pain and lessen swelling in a pinch. It’s best to take the medication as directed by the product label or by your doctor. Acetaminophen may also help with the pain, but it is not an anti-inflammatory.

#3 Rinse with salt water.

A natural way to stop a toothache is to rinse your mouth with warm saltwater. Saltwater cleans infections and provides you with temporary pain relief, and it also heals wounds and reduces inflammation in the mouth. You can make a saltwater oral rinse at home using warm water and table salt, or you can purchase a premade rinse at a pharmacy. Just be sure not to swallow the rinse while using it.
